Philpstoun House, 1676

Utterly charming white-harled U-plan house, slightly dumpy because its original vaulted ground floor has been filled in. Probably built for John Dundas of Philpstoun (initials over the former entrance), it feels as though it lost some of its pizzazz in the 18th century. Sundials at each of the three angles. Lectern doocot in need of attention.

(NT 0660 7775). Philpstoun House is a laird's house of the late 17th century. It comprises a main block with two short gabled S wings and a central gabled N wing to hold the scale-stair. It stands two storeys and attics high. A farm-court lay behind the house; it has been removed. The modern extensions at the N end and against the stair-wing are built in keeping with the older work. A window lintel is dated 1676, when presumably the house was built.

Philpstoun House is in a good state of repair.

Visited by OS (JP) 25 March 1974

A harled, symmetrical house with crowstepped gables, as described and illustrated by the previous authorities. It was built in 1676 for John Dundas. The original basement, which seems to have vaulted ceilings, has been filled in.

NT 066 777 A monitored topsoil strip was carried out in July 2006 during the construction of a swimming pool at Philpstoun House, near Linlithgow (NT07SE 15.00). One field drain of the 'horseshoe' type was uncovered, but there were no features or deposits of archaeological significance.
