(NT 0470 6869) Rose Well (NR)

OS 6" map (1856)

This well, now partly choked with weeds, appears to have been formerly enclosed by stonework which has fallen in. It is a fine spring, with a small stream always issuing from it. Its name is said to derive from the Kings of Scotland using its water by touching people with it as a cure for the Rose or King's Evil (scrofula) before sunrise on New Year's Day (see also NT06NW 2).

Name Book 1856

NT 0473 6869. A hollow c.2.0m across now filled with field clearance. There is no longer a stream issuing from it and no trace of any stone lining.

Visited by OS (JP) 19 March 1974
