(NT 0426 3783) Cross Knowe (NR) (Site of)

OS 25" map, (1940).

Biggar Cross-knowe lay in the main street, where the fountain now stands, opposite the Fleming Arms hotel. It was a small eminence, 20-30' high, crowned with the cross, which had a solid masonry base and a plain shaft. The cross stone had a hole in its centre, and the date 1632, while the square apex had vertical dials on its four sides and the initials JEW, John, Earl of Wigtown, with the date 1694. Hunter considers that a cross existed here since Biggar was created a burgh of barony in 1451, and these dates represent when the cross was rebuilt, or when these stones were inserted. The cross and knowe were removed in 1823, at which time, according to the New Statistical Account (NSA), a coin of Vespasian was found. The cross-stone and apex were preserved and were built into the S gable of the Corn Exchange in 1860.

W Hunter 1867; NSA (J Christison) 1845; J K St Joseph 1952.

The remains of the cross are still built into the corn exchange building.
