Archaeology Notes

NT02SE 21 077 229.

A group of three probable enclosed cremation cemetries are situated on gently sloping ground W of Nether Rigs:

A at NT 076 229. Measures 55ft in diameter within a stony bank, which has been reduced by a stone robbing to a thickness of 6ft. Its maximum height is now one foot. Within the interior there is a low stony mound measuring 30ft by 10ft and 9in in height. It has been disturbed by a small modern pit.

B at NT 076 229. Situated 45 yds NNE of A. It measures 33ft in diameter within a stony bank 6ft thick and one foot high. Within the interior there is a stony mound measuring 15ft by 10ft and 9 in high.

C at NT 076 230. Situated 65 yds N of B. Very heavily denuded. It measures 30ft in diameter within a stony bank only 3ft thick and a few inches high. Within the interior there is a stony mound measuring 11ft by 7ft and 9 ins high.

RCAHMS 1967, visited 1962

'A' at NT 0767 2294 is a level area 17.0m in diameter bounded by the intermittent remains of a probable stony bank. The interior is uneven and stony.

'B' at NT 0771 2297 measures 10.4m in diameter within an earthen bank 1.5m wide and 0.3m high. The interior is uneven.

'C' at NT 0771 2303 are the remains of a denuded circular stone bank 9.0m in diameter which straddles a narrow ridge. In the interior, off centre to the NW is a small mound 2.5m across and 0.3m high composed of loose stone. Much of the NE side of the enclosure has been destroyed. Without excavation it is not possible to accurately classify any of these features but none of them looks recent and with the enclosed cremation cemetery at Weird Law (NT02SE 8) only some 900 metres to the NE, the probability is that they are similar monuments.

Surveyed at 1:10560.
