Archaeology Notes

NT02SE 14 0715 2239 to 0712 2231.

NT 071 223: Two small barrows, 67 yds apart, are situated at a height of 950' OD close to the NW side of the Edinburgh - Moffat road and between two roadside quarries. They measure 16' and 18' in diameter respectively and each of them stands 1'6" in height; no trace can be seen of a ditch in either case. The more southerly of the two has been considerably mutilated by surface quarrying.

RCAHMS 1967, visited 1963

On a terrace between the modern road and the old coach road are two circular earthen mounds 75.0m apart.

'A', at NT 0715 2239, is 6.2m in diameter, 0.7m high, and is covered with peat and heather.

'B', at NT 0712 2231, is 6.0m in diameter, 0.6m high, and grass-covered. Only excavation can prove the mounds to be barrows, but they do bear similarities to other small burial mounds in the district.

Surveyed at 1:10560.

Visited by OS (JP) 29 November 1974
