Architecture Notes (May 2002)

This church was recorded as part of the Threatened Buildings Survey in May 2002 prior to discussions over the future of the building at the request of the Church of Scotland Committee on Artistic Matters. This important landmark was designed by John Starforth I 1884-7 and built in red Corncockle snecked-rubble. The interior fittings of this large church have survived largely unaltered with its lofty galleried interior focused on the pulpit. There is also a good collection of stained glass including the W rose window designed by Starforth and made by James Ballantine & Son in 1887, a number of other windows by Ballantine and windows in the N wall depicting Moses and St Paul by the Abbey Studio 1961. On the E gallery is the organ by Eustace Ingram of 1894.MacGibbon and Ross extended the original halls in 1898. The opportunity was also taken to record the Starforth designed manse adjacent to the church which is now in separate ownership.
