There was a tower at a place called Hart Shaw, which belonged originally to the Stewarts of Rosyth. It was probably the hunting seat of that family, as the name appears to denote.
NSA (written by P Balfour) 1845.
Enquiries have been made regarding the tower at Hartshaw Mill (Now - i.e. 1973 - called Hartshaw Farm, at NS 958 915) mentioned in the NSA, but its site could not be pointed out. Attempts have been made by some gentlemen in the neighbourhood to establish its site, but they have had nothing of a documentary nature sufficiently authentic to produce satisfactory results. The site therefore must be considered as lost. Namr Book 1861.

Site of tower-house, recorded as being the hunting lodge of the Stewarts of Rosyth; it was probably on the same site as the present farm, which has a datestone inscribed 'ROS 1574'.
