(NS 93177 81137) Abbotsgrange: A large farmsteading of two storeys.
Name Book 1860.
The mansion of Abbotsgrange, now vanished, stood some 300 yards SE of NS98SW 1 (q.v.) Within The Orchard is a pillar containing two carved stones, believed to have come from Abbotsgrange, along with the bronze sundial surmounting the whole. The lower stone, evidently once set in masonry, bears the initials B K / V B and date 1618. The initials are those of Elizabeth Ker, wife of James Bellenden of Auchenoull, who owned the lands of Abbotsgrange 1611-30, and her son William Bellenden.
The upper stone was probably carved in the 19th century, in a 13th century style. The sundial is of 18th century design.
Thomas Levingstone in Abbotsgrange is mentioned in 1543, and the lands are again on record in 1552 and 1565.
RCAHMS 1963, visited 1958.
There are no indications as to exactly where the mansion stood. The carved stones, at NS 9294 8137, are as described.
Visited by OS (J P) 17 January 1974.
