Archaeology Notes

NS98SW 3.01 90769 83782

(NS 907 838) A sundial stands in the garden of Howkerse. It has a columnar shaft, set in the socket of an old mill-stone, which now serves as a base. The shaft supports a cubical dial-head surmounted by a ball- finial; one face of the dial is dated 1699, on another is a shield charged with a lion rampant, also the initials IC and IA. Neither the achievement nor the initials suggest any of the local families, and it is consequently possible that the sundial may have been brought from some other part of the country.

RCAHMS 1963, visited 1963.

NS c. 9076 8378. The sundial is as described.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (J P) 17 January 1974.

The Sundial at Howkerse is depicted on the OS 2nd Edition map (Stirlingshire, sheet XXIV, 1915).

Information from RCAHMS (HMLB), November 2002.
