Archaeology Notes

NS94NW 9 c.938 453.

A quantity of Roman medals of brass' of Nero, Trajan, Faustina, and Germanicus, were found by Wm Fullerton, while repairing a walk-mill and rivulet belonging to Carstairs, almost certainly Oldmill (NS 9380 4533).

Information from O G S Crawford, 17 May 1939.

The hoard was buried about the end of the Antonine period. Thirteen of the coins were presented to the Soc of Antiq Scot, on 26 February 1781, by Mr Fullerton.

OSA 1796; G Macdonald 1918; W Camden 1806

The remains of the old mill at Oldmill appear to be relatively modern, and local enquiries failed to establish the site of the 'walk-mill'. No further information was found about the coin hoard.
