OS 6" map (1957)

The church of Carstairs was confirmed to Bishop Engelram of Glasgow in 1170 (Orig Paroch Scot 1851). It was dedicated to St Mary.

In the churchyard there is a large stone, the springer for an octagonal pillar for the ribs of a groined roof. There are two similar stones at Carstairs House. There is also an ancient sundial in the churchyard (Trans Scot Eccles Soc 1915). The present church was built in 1794 (NSA 1845).

H Scott (Fasti Eccles) 1920

Enquiries at the manse failed to confirm that the present church (still in use) is on the site of the church dedicated to St Mary. The sundial, bearing the date 1797, is still in the churchyard but the springer for the octagonal pillar could not be found; the two similar stones allegedly at Carstairs House were not seen; enquiries there proved negative.

Visited by OS (RD) 3 January 1968.
