Archaeology Notes

NS93SW 13 947 314.

NS 947 314. A cairn, 4.6m in diameter and 0.3m in height, lies in pasture 270m SSW of the barrow described on NS93SW 12. A second cairn, 11.0m E, is 3.7m in diameter and not more than 0.3m high.

RCAHMS 1978, visited 1975.

There is nothing in the area of the map reference (RCAHMS 1978) that can be positively identified as a cairn. Although under pasture, the ground here is very stony and there are a number of disturbances and grass-covered spreads of stones. Within 100m of the map reference are some spoil heaps associated with a nearby quarry, two ruined sheep-folds (reduced almost to ground level) and an old field wall or bank.

At NS 9479 3143, in a hollow 90.0m N of the alleged cairn (described on NS93SW 14), is a low irregular grass-covered scatter of stones that may be the second feature noted by the RCAHMS. It is, however, very insignificant and is unlikely to be the remains of a cairn.

Visited by OS (BS) 20 December 1978.
