Archaeology Notes

NS93NE 27 981 376.

NS 9819 3761. (Information from Dr D V Clarke, NMAS). Two cists were found in November 1970 during quarrying operations on top of a low gravel ridge above the flood plain of the River Clyde. They were about 14m apart and both were aligned NE and SW; they were excavated by Dr D V Clarke and Dr A Ritchie. One (A), measured about 1.0m by 0.6m and 0.5m deep; it contained the unaccompanied inhumations of an adult and child. The other cist (B), which was of roughly the same size, was covered by a double layer of capstones and had been paved with flat slabs; it contained the crouched inhumation of an adult accompanied by a beaker, which is now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS).

RCAHMS 1978, visited 1970; D V Clarke and A Ritchie 1971; J N G Ritchie and I Shepherd 1973.
