(NS 9709 2153) Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map (1962)

This cairn occupies a minor summit (352m OD) on the crest of Normangill Rig. The Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB) states that most of it was removed to build the adjacent field walls in 1855, at which time the bones "of a man of large stature" were found lying on the old ground surface beneath the cairn material; there was apparently no trace of a cist.

The irregularly-shaped surviving portion of the cairn measures 26m across and stands to a height of 2m on the W.

OS Name Book 1856; RCAHMS 1978, visited 1969.

It was in a similar condition in 1959.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 20 July 1959.
