(NS 9624 2896) Enclosure (NR)
OS 6" map (1962).
This enclosure was discovered by OS (JLD) in 1959: situated nearly half-way up the N slope of Devonshaw Hill there is a univallate enclosure measuring 37.5m by 33.5m. There is a staggered entrance on the NE side, 5.0m wide, and a short break, probably modern, towards the NW part of the earthwork. There are slight indications of an outer ditch at the SE side only. The turf bank is spread to about 4.0m in places, and is 0.4m high. The site, undoubtedly a homestead-type enclosure, is partially overgrown with bracken concealing much of the interior. No structures are to be found within the enclosure.
Visible on RAF APs (106G.UK 87: 3280-1).
Visited by OS (JLD), 14 July 1959.
Enclosure, Devonshaw Hill: On a small natural shelf on the N flank of Devonshaw Hill, at a height of 312m O D, there are the denuded remains of an oval enclosure measuring 37m by 30m within a single bank and external ditch. Cultivation has reduced the bank to a maximum height of 1.0m and has virtually obliterated the ditch, of which only one short arc, 0.3m deep is now visible on the SSE. The terminal of the bank on the S side of the entrance is markedly inturned, but former ploughing has mutilated the N terminal and has also extended over the interior. This enclosure is comparable in size and structure with the settlement at Berries Burn (NS92SE 6).
