Archaeology Notes

NS88SE 42 8586 8181 to 8592 8201

(Location cited as NS 859 820). Larbert viaduct, opened 1848 by the Scottish Central Rly. A 23-span viaduct with dressed-stone arch rings and coursed-rubble spandrels and piers. The arches are strengthened by old rails.

J R Hume 1976.

This viaduct carries the Glasgow-Perth (main) line of the (former) Caledonian Rly. over the valley of the River Carron between Carmuirs Junction and Larbert at a point where the river forms the boundary between the parishes of Falkirk and Larbert.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 13 November 1997.

Activities

Note (20 November 2019)

Hume states that there are 23 spans but this is likely an error. A recent survey of the aqueduct recorded 14 spans.
