NS88SE 2.01 8556 8218 Larbert Old Church, James Bruce Monument

NS 856 822. Before the Reformation, Larbert was served by a chapel belonging to Cambuskenneth Abbey. It was granted to the Abbey by a bull of Pope Celestine III, dated May 1195 (W Drysdale 1904). No trace of this chapel survives and its position is unknown.

The parish church that preceded the existing structure has also been completely demolished, but a modern headstone in the NE part of the graveyard records that the Rev Robert Bruce of Kinnaird (1554 - 1631) is buried there "at the foot of the pulpit of the first church in Larbert, which he built..." A number of 17th century gravestones are in the church-yard.

The present parish church (at NS 8562 8220) was built in 1820, renovated in 1887 and 1920.

RCAHMS 1963, visited 1954

The headstone, as described, was located at NS 8556 8222. No further information.

Site surveyed at 1:1250.

Visited by OS (DWR) 8 February 1974.

Possibly the site of a pre-Reformation chapel. A new church was built here in the 17th century and stood in the NE part of the present graveyard until the present church was built about 1820.
