(NS 8884 8348) Skaithmuir Tower (NR) (remains of)

OS 6" map (1967)

Skaithmuir Tower now stands as a shell gutted of its woodwork and roof. Built of squared and irregularly coursed rubble, it measures 34'6" E-W by 25'3" over 3'6" thick walls. It originally comprised three storeys and an attic, but later alterations have altered the appearance of the structure. It appears to have been built in 1607, the date carved on the lintel of an original window in the W gable. After a period of use as a dwelling-house, it was later converted into a pumping-station to serve a coal pit of which the shaft was sunk about 6' from the S side walls. One-storeyed extensions were also added at all four corners of the tower, but only the ragged ends of these later walls survive.

RCAHMS 1963, visited 1953

Skaithmuir Tower has been completely demolished and its site grassed over to form part of a playing field.

Visited by OS (BS) 8 February 1974.

Skaithmuir Tower was reused as the pumping-house of a coal mine.
