(NS 8991 8706) Cross (NR)

OS 6" map (1967)

A square pillar, which is locally believed to have been the market cross of the "Old Town of Airth" (NS88NE 17), stands just E of the N drive of Airth Castle, about midway between the Castle and the site of the old settlement. The pillar, which has no pedestal, is 7'2" high and 9 3/4" square, while its head, which comprises the uppermost 10 1/2", is 11" square. This head was evidently once a sundial, as its SE face bears the remains of a gnomon, together with traces of dialling which suggest a 17th century date. The shaft has been fractured and shows traces of two phases of repair - the first with iron cramps, now removed, and the second with cement.

Activities

Field Visit (July 1977)

Airth Mains, NS 899 870 NS88NE 5

Square stone pillar now lying on the edge of a field just E of the N drive of Airth Castle; traditionally believed to be the market cross of High Airth, but has probably been moved from its original position. The top of the cross is missing and the shaft has been broken in two; the upper part is now lying alongside the still vertical lower section.
