Archaeology Notes

NS87NE 34 88812 79902

Cross Well, a circular structure 12' 6" high, is dated 1817. The well was originally built in 1681, an imperfectly documented record stating that its original position was on the S side of the High Street and that it was subsequently moved to the N side before being finally rebuilt on its present site. The existing structure was no doubt copied from its predecessor, as the demi-lion finial resembles in a general way the much wasted remains of the demi-lion from the original well, now in Dollar Park Museum.

RCAHMS 1963, visited 1956.
