Archaeology Notes

NS85SE 1 860 508.

A Roman horse-shoe was found in 1840, 2 1/2' below ground, on the lands of Hillhead (NS 860 508), by the Roman road. It measured 4 1/2" x 4", and though partly corroded, was in good preservation (W Rankine 1873). In 1872, it was in the possession of the proprietor of the lands, but in 1954 neither its provenance nor location could be ascertained.
