Archaeology Notes

NS84SE 63 8744 4365.

Orig Paroch Scot (1851) notes a well dedicated to St Peter near lands belonging to Lanark Friary (NS84SE 23). Reid considers this to be a reference to St Patrick's Well, situated on the NE side of St Patrick's Road: a copious spout of water running in a deeply excavated channel down a steep bank to the Clyde. A strong semi-circular wall holds up the bank to prevent landslip. Local tradition is that this Patrick was not the saint but a dweller in a cottage opposite the well.

T Reid 1922; R Morris and F Morris 1982
