OS 6" map (1959)
This cairn (situated about 300m OD on Middle Muir) has long since been removed, leaving a considerable depression in the ground where it stood. Name Book 1858
The depression mentioned in the ONB is 1.5m deep and seems to have been caused by quarrying for the construction of the nearby dyke. It is situated on a low-lying ridge. No trace of the cairn remains.
Visited by OS (JFC) 6 August 1954
Nothing now remains of this cairn. Its site, however, is still visible as a disturbed area, about 30m across, in the centre of which is a small quarry.
RCAHMS 1978, visited 1971
Traces of a cairn remain. The site is an oval area, 28.0m NW-SE by 21.0m, of a fresh, grassy appearance that contrasts with the surrounding heathland; traces of a bank skirt the NW edge, and on the SE periphery is a low, elongated mound of spoil. The central area of the site has been quarried into from the SE leaving a hollow 12.0 by 10.0m across and 1.5m deep; over the dyke to the north has been similar but much more extensive quarrying.
Visited by OS (JM) 26 March 1978
Field Visit (3 September 1942)
This site was included within the RCAHMS Emergency Survey (1942-3), an unpublished rescue project. Site descriptions, organised by county, vary from short notes to lengthy and full descriptions and are available to view online with contemporary sketches and photographs. The original typescripts, manuscripts, notebooks and photographs can also be consulted in the RCAHMS Search Room.
