Archaeology Notes

NS82NE 13 883 274

Circular structure.

Information from HBM (P Ashmore) 16 June 1990.

To the E of Wildshaw Burn just above the 300m OD contour and on a SW-fac ing slope lies a sub-circular enclosure of 7m in diameter. Turf-covered banks with a spread of 2m and 0.5m high have stones showing. No obvious entrance is evident. The surrounding landscape has a peat accumulation of 0.3m in depth but the enclosure is entirely free of it.

T Ward 1990.

'Possible hut-circle at c.NS 8831 2743. Following survey at both 1:2500 and 1:50 this monument was flagged off in April 1990 to ward off encroachment from the road construction work. Unlike the stone circle (NS82NE 11) however, it lay very close to the line of the proposed motorway. It should still be upstanding but in reality it may well have been damaged.'

Information from A Leslie (APG{GUARD}) 13 June 1991.

Activities

Field Visit (9 November 2016)

This enclosure is situated in rough peaty pasture 35m SW of the M74 public road. It is sub-circular on plan and measures 4.6m from E to W by 3.6m transversely, within a grass-grown stony bank spread up to 1.3m wide and 0.3m high. There is no clear trace of an entrance and the interior is featureless, save for a small boulder on the N.
