(NS 85001048) Cross (OE) (Supposed Site of Ancient Church)

OS 6" map (1900)

Cross, Mennock Pass- Some 3 1/2 miles up the valley of the Mennock Water on a plateau to the north of the roadway and east of a sheepfold is a cross formed of soil and gravel. It is raised from 1 foot to 1 1/2 feet above the surrounding level and is a Latin cross, measuring 52 feet in extreme length, 34 feet from the foot to the crossing, and 47 feet across the arms, with a general breadth of about 11 feet.

RCAHMS 1920

In all probability the cross marks some early Christian settlement, a hypotheses supported by the ecclesiastical meanings of local names.

W M'Millan 1930

This feature is constructed with banks of earth and stone measuring 4.0m in breadth and 0.2m. in height. The longer axis lying NE SW measures 15.5m. overall and the transverse arm measures 15.0m.

No evidence of a church was found hereabouts, but 45.0m to the NW of the cross is a small rectangular foundation measuring 9.0m N-S by 5.0m. E-W which would appear to be that of a long-disused cottage.
