Archaeology Notes

NS80NE 10 883 069

Dalveen Castle, a property of the Douglases in the 15th century, was situated near Nether Dalveen farmsteading (NS 883 069). One wing still existed in the memory of the present inhabitants, being square, about 30' over the walls, with a vault below, and an outside stone stair.

C T Ramage 1876

It was taken down in 1836 to provide material for the present house and the Douglas arms date 1622 have been built into the walls.

RCAHMS 1920.

There is no local knowledge (Mrs Brown, Dalveen) of the actual site of Dalveen Castle.

The 1622 datestone is built into the north wall of the farmhouse at NS 8843 0694 and the Douglas coat of arms is in the west wall at NS 8842 0692.

The farmhouse is constructed partly of large sandstone blocks probably from the castle.

Visited by OS (BS), 12 January 1978.
