(NS 7781 9251) Chapel Well (NR)

OS 6" map (1958)

A spring well, from which the holy water was supplied to the nearby chapel (NS79SE 8).

Name Book 1858

The Chapel Well, formerly known as "Christ's Well" (W Drysdale 1904) cannot now be seen as it has lately been covered up with soil and debris. Its position is pointed out just E of the bottom of a flight of steps descending to a small burn. There is a tradition in the village that its water was used medicinally.

RCAHMS 1963, visited 1954

As described by the RCAHMS, the Chapel Well has been filled in, and its site covered with vegetation and debris.

Visited by OS (JP) 13 December 1973
