Archaeology Notes

NS77NW 33 716 788.

A stone axe found at NS 716 788, near Kilsyth, is in Colzium House Museum, Kilsyth. It measures 6.7 by 2.1ins. A thin section (STI 1, preserved in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow) shows that it is of a tholeiitic basalt with andesitic affinites.

This object has been alternatively classified as an adze. It has been petrologically identified as tholeiitic basalt.
