OS 6" map (1958)
On the 22nd June 1679, the Covenanters' army was camped at Hamilton on the south side of the River Clyde, their cannon commanding the bridge known as Bothwell Bridge. A Royalist army commanded by the Duke of Monmouth was encamped on the north side of the river, within a quarter of a mile of the bridge, and then bombarded it until the Covenanters ran out of powder with which to reply. While the Covenanters were still preparing for battle, Monmouth's forces crossed the bridge and advanced, throwing the Covenant forces into disorder. Almost at once 1,200 men surrendered and the rest fled.
