Archaeology Notes

NS75NW 18 7229 5562.

In November 1650 Cromwell sent General Lambart to Hamilton with five regiments of cavalry to overawe the west-country Covenanters. They were attacked by Colonel Kerr, but, two miles west of Hamilton, Kerr was killed and his forces routed.

NSA 1845 (W Meek and W Buchan)

(Area NS 7229 5562) On Cadzow Bridge is a plaque with following inscription:- "The Battle of Hieton was fought on the banks of this stream between the Covenanters under Colonel Ker and the English under General Lambart in 1650 - Erected by Hamilton and District Civic Society." No additional information was encountered during investigation.
