(NS 7273 4277) Tweedieside (NAT)

OS 6" map (1912)

A superior farm steading, the property of J S Lockhart, Esq., of Castlehill. This Farm House is built upon the site of a castle named either 'Tweedie Castle' or 'Silvertonhill'. Part of the foundations of the old castle are said to form a part of the farmhouse. 'Silvertonhill Castle' seems to have been the older name.

(Information from James Miller, Mount Strathaven; James White, Tweediehall; D McAllum, Over Tweedieside).

OS Name Book 1858.

The farmhouse at Tweedieside was a single-storey building until about 1900, when a second storey was added (Farmer, Tweedieside). No trace of the old castle was found and there is no local knowledge of it.

Visited by OS (RD), 4 August 1966.
