(NS 7360 4691) The Three Stones (NR)
OS 6" map (1898)
Within the burial ground of the Struthers of Avonholm are 3 erect stone slabs standing about 3' out of the ground, and each about 3' broad and 6" thick. The arrangement does not suggest that they have been part of a circle. There are vertical grooves on two, and the centre stone has a cup-mark, and below the cup is a faintly marked circle about 1' in diameter. These stones are about 6' apart, and thus may have marked human burials.
J A Wilson 1936.
The three stones of weathered limestone, stand in an arc, with their length towards the centre. They measure 0.9, 1.1, and 1.2m, in height respectively, and are 0.3m thick. The "cup-mark" on the centre stone is 3" in diameter, and is undoubtedly of modern origin. The vertical grooves on the other stones are the result of weathering. The burial ground in which they stand is planted with conifers and lies at the NE end of a ridge, at its highest point.
It is doubtful if these stones ever formed a circle and their antiquity is equally in doubt.
