Archaeology Notes

NS71SW 11 c747 120.

Fortlet (cf. Antonine fortlets at Milton and Durisdeer) at NS 747 119, and a possible marching camp at NS 747 121 were seen on APs by St Joseph and confirmed by excavation 1952-63. A metalled road issued from the S gate of the fortlet and flagged and paved surfaces were noted. There was evidence of burning, iron slag, fragments of glass and 15th century pottery, but no signs of earlier occupation.

A road running across the camp is late 18th century.

Traces are visible on APs (CPE/Scot/324-3429-30)

J Clarke and A Wilson 1960;

The site was pointed out roughly by the farmer of Bankhead. There were no traces of banks or ditches in a sloping pasture field. No ground evidence was encountered.

Visited by OS (JLD) 6 July 1954

The indicated site of the alleged camp falls on, and largely below the crest of a south-facing slope, and the fortlet on naturally undulating ground again on a south- facing slope. Both areas are under pasture and only denuded rig and furrow was noted in the area of the camp.

Visited by OS (JRL) 23 March 1978

St Joseph suggested that he had located a fortlet and possible marching camp at Bankhead in the 1950s, through cropmarks on air photographs, which were subsequently confirmed by excavation (Clarke and Wilson 1960: 136).
