Archaeology Notes

NS71SE 18 7560 1194.

(NS 7560 1194) The present farmhouse of Tower stands on the site of the tower or small fortalice occupied by the McCalls of Guffockland, mentioned in the late 16th-early 18th centuries.

W Wilson 1904

Tower is of uncertain age, but is 19th/20th century in external appearance. There is no local knowledge of an earlier structure, but Mr J Hendrie, tenant farmer, Tower Sanquhar, indicated a dressed stone lintel inserted in the stone built wall of an (?19th century) outbuilding at NS 7558 1196. It is inscribed: T 1768 M-, but no detail of its history or original provenance was obtained.
