(NS 7881 0794) Castle (NR) (Site of)
OS 6" map (1958)
The trench around the site of this castle is still visible. A quantity of broad gold pieces were found nearby some years before 1856. Several carved stones are built in a neighbouring dyke. Nothing, not even the name, is known of this castle.
Name Book 1856
Brown mentions the find of "old gold coins" at Goosehill Castle. (Porteous notes "a quantity of broad gold pieces")

The air photograph shows surface markings over a considerable area.
Visible on APs CPE Scot 324: 4313.
The published site of the castle lies on an undulating north-facing hillsope. There is no evidence of earthworks and the majority of the AP marks indicate areas of natural slumping. The farmer (Mr Smiley, South Mains) regularly ploughs the area and he has not encountered stone concentrations. The nearby dyke is constructed of small stone slabs but no worked stones were visible.
