Archaeology Notes

NS67NW 16 6098 7949.

(NS 609 794) A fine obelisk-type sundial, similar to that at Ballindalloch (NS58NW 8), stands in the garden N of Ballencleroch. It is said to have come from Lennox Castle (built between 1837 and 1841) and, if so, may have originated at Woodhead (NS67NW 8). It total height is 6', The 9" square shaft is divided into 3 cubes by incised lines, which frame sunk dials of various designs. It has an octagonal capital, a type dating to the 17th century, and continuing into the 18th.

The capital of another obelisk sundial, also octagonal, lies beside the entrance to the house.

A cubical-type sundial is set on the top of an arched gateway. opening into the back court. It is obviously not in its proper position, the dial facing N. The arch itself is said to have been taken from the kitchen of a house older that that of 1665; if so, it was presumably a fireplace-arch.

RCAHMS 1963, visited 1953.

NS 8098 7949. The obelisk-type sundial is as described. The two other fragments were not located.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (J P) 15 January 1974.
