Archaeology Notes

NS66SW 7 6000 6476.

The chapel (later church) of Little St Kentigern. St Mungo (Scott 1915-61) was build by David Cuninghame at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1593, it and the surrounding burial ground were sold to the Town Council, apparently to provide a hospital for the poor. Entries in the kirk-session records narrate preparations for fitting up the church as a hospital, but it is not certain that the scheme was carried into effect. Remaining in the town's possession till 1754, the property was then sold for the erection of the Saracen Head Inn, which latterly consisted of a tenement of houses and shops immediately W of Saracen Lane (NS 6000 6476), and which were demolished in 1905.

R Renwick 1908; H Scott et al 1915-61.

Glasgow, Gallowgate, Saracen Head Inn.

Now demolished. Used to stand on the South side of Gallowgate near Sportmouth.
