Activities

Field Visit (31 March 1954)

Topographically, Crosshill would appear to be the more likely site of the two. It is a high natural eminence with a good view all round. No further information relating to the cross was found.

Visited by OS (J L D) 31 March 1954.

Desk Based Assessment (1954)

NS66SW 25 6071 6099.

The NSA (1845) and Ure (1793) state that a cross stood on top of the Crosshill (NS 6071 6099), but it is located by a Mr Shearer (Wilson 1936) to High Crosshill, near Burnside Station (NS 6153 6444).

The cross was 10' high and 3 1/2' broad, ornamented with various figures, notably that of Christ riding on an ass. It was destroyed by a mob during the last persecution in Scotland.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845; D Ure 1793; J A Wilson 1936.
