(NS 6157 5249) Mound (NR)

OS 6" map, Lanarkshire, 2nd ed., (1910)

An artificial mound of earth, 14ft high and square on top, each side measuring 12 yds.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.

A flat-topped, squarish mound, measuring 7m by 7m on top and 2.5m average height, with regularly sloping sides. It is of artificial appearance. There is no trace of masonry or any construction on top, and there is no ditch. It is possibly an earler site of the Lickprivick residence, occupying higher ground than the later castle, and thus is a possible motte. (See NS65NW 15 for a similar relationship of a motte and later castle - Mains Castle).

Visited by OS (J F C) 17 March 1955.

This mound is as previously described, except that it is now almost circular, measuring some 24m in diameter. If it is a motte, its sides are not as steep as would have been expected; and it does not appear to have any connection with the quarry to its north.

Revised at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (W D J) 19 November 1964.

This mound is now surrounded by housing development. Excavators have dug trenches into its base, but it is still essentially intact.
