Archaeology Notes

NS65NW 4 c. 60 59.

An oak dug-out canoe, 10' x 2' was found about 1831 when deepening a ditch on the march between Cathkin and Castlemilk. (Castlemilk House: NS 609 595).

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845; J Stuart 1868.

Field investigation produced no further information.

Visited by OS (J L D) 1 April 1954.

About 1831 what was possibly a logboat was discovered during ditch-digging 'on the march between Cathkin and Castlemilk' in a hilly area which varies in altitude between 50 and 100m OD. The 'bottom of a boat' measured 10' (3.1m) in length by 2' (0.6m) in breadth and was 'all of black oak'; 'strong wooden nails' (which were presumably treenails) were also found.

The discovery is discussed by both Wilson and Stuart. The former describes it as 'of more artificial construction' than the Glasgow logboats and sees it as being 'secured by large wooden pins'. Stuart, however, classifies it as a 'canoe'. It is now lost.

NSA 1845; D Wilson 1851; Stuart 1868; R J C Mowat 1996.
