(NS 6073 3721) Grave (NR)
OS 6" map (1912)
This grave is a mound in the shape of a coffin, not much raised above the surface. It is situated on the N slope of the Windy Wizen. Although called "Wallace's Grave" it is not supposed that Wallace was buried here; the tradition is that the English killed in the skirmish between Wallace and Fenwick (see NS63NW 6) are buried here.
Name Book 1856
Thomson, who mis-names this as "Wallace's Cairn" (see NS63NW 3) describes a mound about 30 yds in length by 2 or 3 yds at the base, situated on the side of a hill. "Its form and name, and place at the entrance to a pass, confirm the popular tradition that it is the resting place of the dead."
J H Thomson 1903
This feature is a slender 'island' formed by two old hollow tracks on either side of it, merging into one on the N and S. It is on the steep slope of a hill and is 30.0m long, but it is certainly not a burial mound.
