(NS 5755 7898). 'An iron padlock, consisting of a rectangular lock, measuring 3 5/8 by 2 1/2 by 1 1/2ins., and a flat loop of iron the ends of which pass respectively inside the lock and into a socket lying along the top; at the base, on the opposite end from the loop, is a slot for the insertion of the key', was donated in 1917 by J Masterton to the National Museum of Antiquities. It was found together with another padlock of similar construction, 5ins. in length, at Dunglass Quarry, half a mile south of Balaggan House.

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1917.

The padlock from Dunglass Quarry, Accession NO.MJ.187, is of unusual design and possibly dates from the 17th century.

Information from S Maxwell, assit keeper, National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS), to OS, 1958.
