Archaeology Notes

NS56SE 20 596 649.

A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary stood on the N side of the Trongate, immediately W of the Tolbooth (NS 596 649). First mentioned in 1293, it appears to have been superseded by the collegiate church (NS56SE 21 q.v.) which took possession of it as an endowment. The site must have been used for extensions to the Tolbooth or the Town Hall and adjoining buildings, and has long been undistinguishable from the surrounding properties.

R Renwick 1908; H Scott et al 1915-61.
