A watching brief was carried out by W J Lindsay of the Scottish Urban Archaeological Trust in June 1981 on the site of the new Sheriff Courthouse at Carlton Place/Nicholson Street. By the time of the site visit most of the deposits had been destroyed, all upstanding buildings had been demolished and a hole 5m deep had been dug. No medieval deposits were apparent. The deposits seemed to be of geological rather than archaeological interest.
