Archaeology Notes

NS56NE 7 563 667.

"In a field on Dowanhill estate, a little east of Dowanhill House, about 50 yds from Byres Road, there are several large stones lying lengthways, half covered with earth. These were termed the Sow-Back Stones. Tradition says that people who died of plague were buried there."

J Napier 1873.

No trace was seen of these stones. Dowanhill House, now demolished, was situated at NS 5616 6681, thus placing the site of the stones in the area centred NS 5634 6678.

Visited by OS (W M J) 17 August 1951.
