Archaeology Notes

NS55SE 14 NS 55789 50495.

NS 557 505 Cairn, West Revoch. A cairn is shown here on the highest part of West Revoch farm on Ainslie's Plan (Garret Law fell on another farm). The remains appear to comprise a circular cairn 21m in diameter, but extend south to form an oval, 21m by 30m. A dip divides the cairn from the adjoining material, but the latter overlaps the expected perimeter of the cairn, which is not recognisable here. The cairn has been severely quarried on the south east side, so this could be spoil, or an earlier oval cairn. Over 50m of the circumference of the round cairn is clear, on the north and north east, and particularly over about 10m on the west, where the original profile is preserved to about 1.5m. The general height of the cairn is about 1m.

T C Welsh 1979; J Ainslie 1789; Information contained in letter from T C Welsh to OS, 19 September 1979.

for further details see MS/737/12 and MS/1508.

Situated on the summit of a hillock at an altitude of 259m are the scant remains of a cairn originally shown on John Ainslie's West Revoch Farm Plan of 1789. Little cairn material is extant, and the general area has been subject to considerable later disturbance. Some parts have been cut out, possibly the result of treasure hunters.

S Hunter, R Hunter 2005.

This cairn, which is situated in an extensive area of rig-and-furrow 500m NE of West Revoch farmsteading, is as described by Hunter and Hunter in 2005 (MS 2503).

Visited by RCAHMS (AGCH, JH) 19 July 2007.
