Toledo Cinema, 380 Clarkston Road, 1933, William Beresford Inglis

Originally designed for nearly 1,600 seats, Inglis used the technique, pioneered in this country by James McKissack, of invoking a sense of romance and mystery by his Spanish-inspired exterior. The Spanish interior followed the ideas popularised by the American designer John Eberson, to create an 'atmospheric' context for the showing of films of exotic places. Split into three screens in 1982, the American Spanish balcony outside is all that remains now of a sumptuous entertainment palace. The main auditorium was demolished and windows added to the frontages for conversion to flats, c.2002. Some reproductions of decorative features from the auditorium are in the new entrance foyer.
