(NS 5893 5625) Castle Hill (NAT)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1974)

Castle Hill: An eminence on the S side of Kittoch. Ure (1793) states that an old castle (the predecessor of The Peel - NS55NE 14), once stood here. There are no visible remains of it and its site is not known.

D Ure 1793; Name Book 1857.

An irregularly shaped hill some 10m high with a flat, oval top, 24m by 17m, and precipitous slopes on all sides. There is no trace of masonry or any construction on top. This is apparently a natural knoll artificially flattened on top to serve as a defensive position - a possible motte.

Visited by OS (J F C) 21 March 1955.

This is essentially a natural mound, the SW side of which has been built out to support part of the castle. The only remains lie scattered here. A boundary wall runs along the E side. Access appears to have been by a series of terraces on the NW.

T C Welsh nd.

The series of ramps on the N side of the hill appear to be of recent construction, possibly used to remove the stones from the ruins described by Ure in 1793. Fragments of a causeway 9m wide were noted on S side, with traces of foundations, possibly indicating a gatehouse. Contrary to Ure, Castle Hill cannot have been the predecessor the The Peel (NS55NE 14) as it was under different ownership (Stewart of Minto from 1490, previously Semple). The historical evidence suggests an early castle here.

T C Welsh 1984.
