Archaeology Notes

NS54NE 33 569 462.

In an angle of the Myres Burn, a small barytes mine comprises a main shaft, two spoil heaps of barytes, a flat flooring, possibly for store, now removed, and a length of solidly faced stone dyke along the river to prevent seepage. From the floor platform a narrow, slightly hollow hard track runs west in the direction of Myres.

An isolated shaft, perhaps exploratory, lies some distance off to the ESE.

The 1st edition Ordnance Survey 25-inch map (Renfrewshire, 1857) depicts ground disturbance on the N and S banks of the Myres Burn at NS 5668 4621 and NS 5683 4617. This is probably the Myres Hill Barytes Mine remains as described by Lonie and Newall (1976) and Grampian Speleological Group (2008).
