Dragoons pursuing the Covenanters rescued from Newmilns Tower (see NS53NW 16) learned that John Smith of Croonan had given them food. He was shot at his door by the soldiers and until lately, his grave could be seen in the garden of the old farmhouse.

This tradition is known at Cronan farm, but nothing has been found there.
